In 1980, I posed as a member of a pop cultural cabal, in a photo illustrating the article about “the rise of a national fad [New Wave] that could become the style we remember the eighties by.” The piece proved to be prescient. MTV was still a year away, and when I actually joined in the production of “pop culture” - directing music videos - I was usually on the other side of the table, negotiating with executives like those we depicted in the board room.
